WASHINGTON, D.C. – Closing out a four-game road trip, the UConn women's volleyball team battled close, but couldn't get over the edge as it fell to Georgetown, 3-1, Saturday evening at McDonough Arena.
UConn (12-6, 4-2 BIG EAST) claimed the opening set, but Georgetown (5-12, 1-5 BIG EAST) claimed the next three to earn its first conference win of the season.
Senior Kennadie Jake-Turner tallied a season-high 15 kills on a team-best .375 hitting percentage. Junior Jasmine Davis recorded a double-doubler with 11 kills and digs apiece, and senior Caylee Parker also picked up a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs.
Tied up at 9-9 early on, Parker got going early, junior Karly Berkland served up an ace, and Jake-Turner added another kill to put the Huskies ahead, 12-10. Jake-Turner maintained the hot hand, starting a 6-2 spurt to give the Huskies breathing room as they held on for the opening point.
Georgetown took advantage of four UConn errors to take a 7-3 edge to start the second stanza. The Huskies staged a comeback as junior Mia Ruffolo capped a 4-0 run with two straight service aces to put the scoreboard in their favor, 13-12. The Hoyas stole the momentum right back with a 6-2 run and pulled away as it evened the match.
Jake-Turner started the third set with a pair of aces as part of a 5-0 run. However, Georgetown quickly flipped the momentum by taking the following six points, and a 13-3 streak changed the momentum of the game. Following a Husky timeout, Jake-Turner and Parker combined for three straight kills, but the early deficit was too great to overcome.
UConn started a set strong once again, using a 5-2 start in the fourth frame until Georgetown matched matched the run to make it 7-all. Davis and Parker were the driving forces behind a Husky comeback, making it a 14-12 game. The Hoyas had an answer for each rally, and pushed out a 24-22 edge until two straight blocks from UConn extended the match. Parker's 10th kill gave UConn the advantage at 26-25, though Georgetown was able to fend off match point, and eventually took the final frame 29-27 to end the match.
The Huskies will return to Storrs next weekend to start a four-game homestand against Providence on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 5:30 p.m.
