STORRS, Conn. – Starting its final week of the regular season, the UConn women's volleyball team fell 3-0 to Butler Thursday afternoon at Gampel Pavilion.
Graduate student McKayla Wuensch highlighted the afternoon for UConn (20-9, 12-5 BIG EAST) as she recorded her 2,000th career assist.
Butler (15-15, 9-8 BIG EAST) continued its road dominance as it handed the Huskies their first conference defeat via sweep this season.
Senior Kennadie Jake-Turner paced the Huskies with 12 kills on a .450 hitting percentage. Fellow senior Caylee Parker followed with 10 kills, and Wuensch handed out 32 assists.
The first set went wire-to-wire as neither team was able to push its lead by more than two points. Junior Allie Garland put the Huskies up 10-8 with a swing from the right side, but the Bulldogs went on a 3-0 run to stave off the momentum. Junior Mia Ruffolo served up an ace to tie it for the 17th time at 24-all, but Butler took the next three points to win the set.
Butler carried the late-set steam into the start of the second, using a 6-0 spurt to double up the Huskies, 14-7. UConn attempted to mount a comeback as kills from Jake Turner and Caylle Parker made it a 21-17 game, but Butler went on a 4-2 streak to close the frame.
The Bulldogs continued to have UConn's number, starting the third set with a 5-0 run to force an early timeout. The Huskies worked their way back into the match, and Jake-Turner went for two straight kills to tie it up at 18-all. However, Butler took the ensuing four points and closed the game on a 7-1 streak.
UConn will return to Gampel Pavilion for the final time this season tomorrow at 7 p.m. for Senior Night.
