HARTFORD, Conn. – The No. 23/23 UConn men's basketball team puts its perfect record on the line Saturday afternoon when it entertains first-time opponent Binghamton University at the XL Center in Hartford. Tipoff time is set for noon.
The Huskies (3-0) have begun the season with three lopsided victories and the game against Binghamton completes their four-game, season-opening homestand.
Binghamton, a member of the America East Conference has started the season 1-2, beating Sacred Heart and bowing to Cornell and Columbia, the latter game in overtime.
UConn so far has shown a balanced offense and a suffocating defense in its first three games. The Huskies have five players averaging in double figures, led by sophomore forward Adama Sanogo (17.0). Guards R.J. Cole (13.3) and Tyrese Martin (13.0) are next on the scoring parade, while guard Jalen Gaffney (10.7) and forward Tyler Polley (10.0) are also in double figures.
Junior forward Akok Akok is the team's top rebounder (7.0) and Cole is handing out the most assists (5.0).
It is the UConn defense that has been devastating to its three opponents, however. The Huskies are holding opponents to a mere 31.2 percent shooting overall and 22.0 percent from three-point range. UConn has forced opponents into a combined total of 78 turnovers and has scored 110 points off turnovers.
Binghamton is coached by Levell Sanders, a former Seton Hall teammate of UConn Coach Dan Hurley. The Bearcats are led in scoring by St. John's transfer John McGriff (14.3), with Kellen Amos (13.3) and Tyler Bertram (12.0) also in double figures. Ogheneyole Akuwovo is the team's top rebounder (6.3).
For the Huskies, it is the final home game before the team heads for Paradise Island in the Bahamas next week to compete in the Battle 4 Atlantis. UConn will meet nationally-ranked Auburn in the tourney's first round on Wednesday, Nov. 24, at 2:30 p.m. (ESPN). Â
