The UConn Huskies will kick-off the second half of the season on Sunday, January 2 with a match-up against the Harvard Crimson on the road, the first-ever meeting between the two teams on the ice.
The Huskies return to the ice for the first time since November 27 after seeing four games on the schedule in December postponed due to covid related issues within the program. The Huskies will make-up their Hockey East series with Merrimack with a home game against the Warriors on Tuesday, January 25 at the XL Center and trip up to Lawler Rink on Tuesday, February 8. There has been no decision on make-up dates for the two-game series with AIC.
UConn finished the first half of the season with an 8-6-0 mark and at 5-4-0 in Hockey East. The Huskies are currently in seventh in the most up to date Hockey East standings with 14 points in nine games played.
Under head coach Mike Cavanaugh, the Huskies are 13-13-4 against teams from the ECAC. UConn is 2-0-0 this season with a win at Dartmouth and a home win over Colgate already on the ledger. After Sunday's match-up UConn will take on Yale and potentially Quinnipiac (in the CT Ice tournament) this season.
In their last game on November 27, UConn posted a 6-1 win at home over Colgate. Six different Huskies scored goals in the win with sophomore Artem Shlaine picking up a goal and two assists for a career-best three points. Senior Marc Gatcomb and Carter Turnbull and sophomores Hudson Schandor and Nick Capone all had a goal and an assist.
Sophomore Ryan Tverberg is the Huskies leading scorer this season, scoring nine goals with seven assists through 14 games. He is a +7 on the season five multi-point games and had a five-game goal scoring streak as well. He is tied for eighth in Hockey East in scoring, averaging 1.14 points per game. His nine goals is tied for sixth.
In nine Hockey East games, Tverberg has posted a team-best 11 points on seven goals and four assists.
UConn grad student goaltender Darion Hanson was named the runner-up for Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for November. He started all seven games in November, posting a 4-3-0 mark with a 2.43 goals against average with a .921 save percentage and 199 saves.
Hanson, who transferred in this season from Union, and has started all 14 games and played every minute for the Huskies. On the season, he owns a 2.35 goals against average and a .923 save percentage, sixth among league leaders in both categories. He has played the sixth most minutes in Hockey East and has a 328 saves on the season, fifth best.
Seniors Jachym Kondelik and Marc Gatcomb are tied for 20th in Hockey East in scoring with 12 points. Kondelik has three goals and nine assists, tied for 10th in the league. He is the Huskies leading active career point leader at 83 points (19g/64a).
Gatcomb's five goals is tied for 21st in Hockey East. His 12 points marks his previous season-best marks set during his sophomore and junior seasons.Â
Junior Vladislav Firstov has also found the back of the net five times this season. Sophomore Hudson Schandor has 10 points in 12 games on a goal and nine assists.
