STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's soccer team exploded out of the gates with a dominating 3-0 shutout of the Sacred Heart Pioneers in Tuesday afternoon's 2021 season opener.
Moussa Wade, Felix Metzler and Maxwel De-Bodene each found the back of the net for the Huskies, with Ben Awashie, Thomas Decottignies, and Sosa Emovon providing the helpers. Senior transfer Jahmali Waite patrolled the pipes for the full 90 minutes and picked up a pair of saves to earn the clean sheet.
Wade opened up the game scoring in the 15th minute of the first frame. Awashie delivered a beautiful pass on the move to Wade inside the box, and the sophomore tapped the ball into the back of the net to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies continued to attack, and doubled their lead at the 58:21 mark off the foot of Metzler. Freshman Giancarlo Vaccaro sent a cross over towards the far right sideline into the vicinity of Jayden Reid, who dished the ball back out to classmate Thomas Decottignies. Decottignies passed into an open area where Metzler was positioned, and the junior delivered a strike to double the UConn lead.
Max De-Bodene put the finishing touches on the victory with his first-career goal in the 75th. After the UConn defense forced a turnover, the Huskies found themselves with a favorable 3-on-2 break. Awashie sent the ball up ahead to Emovon who then zipped a pass to De-Bodene, and the freshman nestled one into the back left corner of the net to increase the advantage to 3-nil.
