The UConn track & field program will have student-athletes taking part in a pair of events this weekend. The Huskies will host their annual Multi-Event Challenge in the Hugh S. Greer Field House and will also send a group to the Virginia Tech Challenge, both being held on Friday and Saturday, February 19 and 20.
The Huskies will welcome athletes from Northeastern University to campus for the heptathlon and pentathlon this weekend. On the men's side, seniors Benjamin Grosse (Wayzta, Minn.) and Jordan Torney (Toms River, N.J.), junior Nicholas Pronovost (Coventry, Conn.) and sophomore Travis Snyder (Saco, Maine) will be competing.Â
Torney finished second at last year's event with a career-best 5,423 points, winning three events, and he won the event back in 2017. Last indoor season he won the heptathlon at the IC4A Championships and finished second at the AAC Championship. Grosse was the 2018 champion at the home event, totaling 4,920 points. During the 2019 season, Grosse was the heptathlon champion at both the IC4A and New England Championship.
On the women's side, senior Kelly Ward (Oxford, Conn.) and a pair of freshmen in Katelyn Reid (Middletown, N.J.) and Emma Phelps (Westborough, Mass.) are set to compete. Ward won the pentathlon at this event back in 2018 with 3,041 points. In her last competition last indoor season she took second in the pentathlon at the ECAC Championship with a career-best 3,520 points.
