Huskies Fall to No. 11 BU in OT

STORRS, Conn. – Boston University freshman Luke Tuch scored the game-winning goal 44 seconds into the overtime to lift the No. 11 Terriers over UConn, 3-2, Saturday afternoon at the Freitas Ice Forum.
The Huskies drop their third-straight and fall to 8-9-2 on the season while BU improves to 9-2-0.
UConn took a 2-1 lead into the third period but BU senior Max Kaufman tied the game up at 13:59 and then Tuch won in in the overtime, dealing the Huskies their fourth overtime loss this season. Both teams went scoreless on the power play with BU's overtime winner coming just as a UConn penalty expired.
The Huskies went up 2-0 in the first period behind goals from junior Carter Turnbull (Nanaimo, British Columbia) and senior Brian Rigali (Libertyville, Ill.). BU cut the lead in half late in the first as Jay O'Brien scored with under a minute to play. O'Brien and Kaufman both finished with a goal and an assist while senior Logan Cockerill had an assist on all three goals.
Junior Tomas Vomacka (Trutnov, Czech Republic) made 28 saves in taking the loss. Freshman goaltender Vinny Duplessis stopped 27 for BU.
1st period:
The Huskies struck first and early, grabbing a 1-0 lead on Turnbull's ninth of the season at 1:28. Sophomore Carter Berger (North Vancouver, British Columbia) ripped a shot from the top left circle that deflected off Turnbull in front and past Duplessis.
UConn made it 2-0 at the 15:32 mark on another deflection goal in front of Duplessis. Getting the puck out of a scrum in front, Rigali circled the net to the top of the right circle and fired on net, deflecting off a BU defensman's skate and just out of the reach of Duplessis for his third goal of the season.
The Terriers cut into the lead at 19:09 as O'Brien took a feed from Kaufman and cut to the front of the net, liftin a backhander over Vomacka for his seventh of the season.
2nd period:
UConn's Kale Howarth (Red Deer, Alberta) took a five-minute major and game misconduct for roughing at the 2:34 mark but the Huskies were able to kill off the BU power play and keep the game 2-1 headed to the third.
3rd period:
Both teams came up empty on early period power play chances before BU found the tying goal at 13:59. Keeping the puck in the zone, Cockerill played it out of the left corner and found Kaufman sitting in the slot for a one-timer to tie the game at 2-2 on his first goal of the season.
OT:
BU carried 43 seconds of a power play into the overtime session and found the game-winner just as the penalty expired. Tuch took a feed on the right from Cockerill and circled to the front of the net to bury a wrister 44 seconds in to win it.
