MECHANICSVILLE, Va. – The UConn women's cross country team took second place in the 10-team Spider-Patriot Cross Country Classic from Pole Green Park Saturday afternoon. The Huskies finished the race tied as a team with Georgetown, both with 42 points, but take second place in a tie-breaker.
"We really showed up today and built off momentum from Florida," said Head Coach Lindsay Crevoiserat. "Our older group got out and was geared up for the top-10 while our younger group really built up during the race and in that last mile really closed."
All of UConn's top-five finishers earned a spot among the top-15 finishers at the race led by senior Randi Burr (Westerly, R.I.) who was fourth overall in a time of 17:11.8 on the 5K course. Freshman Jenna Zydanowicz (West Hartford, Conn.) next up with a sixth place finish, posting a time of 17:11.8.
Running her first race of the season, senior Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.) took eighth place overall with a time of 17:25.3. Classmate Danielle Jordan (Clifton Park, N.Y.) was 10th overall at 17:28.0 and freshman Caroline Towle (Bedford, Mass.) rounded out the top-five in 14th in a time of 17:31.8.
"It really came together today," said Crevoiserat. "Beating regionally ranked Iona and ending up tied with national ranked Georgetown where we lose a tie breaker technically, but it was a close race and showing we are right with them is great heading into the Big East. I thought Mia had a great opener for her, great showing."
"Overall, we really, really wanted to race this weekend and it just wasn't possible in the Northeast," said the head coach. "This worked out, right place, right time. And we were so ready to take it on. Give credit to our athletes who went after it today and go the job done."
The Huskies will now head to the BIG EAST Championship scheduled for March 5 in Gary, North Carolina.
