LUBBOCK, Texas – The Huskies trailed 4-3 with T.C. Simmons pinch-hitting with two outs and the tying run at second base. The junior collected his first career hit as a Husky, a bullet single to right field that looked like it would tie the game in the ninth, but a perfect throw to the plate by Kurt Wilson ended the ballgame and the Huskies lost to No. 9 Texas Tech in the series opener at Dan Law Field.
UConn entered the ninth inning trailing the Red Raiders by a 4-2 score but mounted another ninth inning rally. Christian Fedko and Kevin Ferrer both walked to open the inning. After a diving catch from defensive replacement Parker Kelly at third base, Andy Hague plated Fedko with an RBI ground out that moved Ferrer into scoring position.
Simmons followed by singling on a 2-1 pitch but Ferrer was thrown out at the plate to end the ballgame and give UConn its fifth one-run loss of the season to drop the Huskies to 4-7 on the year.
UConn got on the board first on Friday with a two-out RBI single from Christian Fedko in the opening frame.
Cal Conley responded with a two-out, two-run double in the first and two-run single in the third.
UConn starter Ben Casparius gutted out five innings of work, allowing three hits, three runs, five walks and struck out eight.
Kenny Haus came out of the UConn bullpen and delivered 2.2 innings with one unearned run allowed after a throwing error on a bunt allowed a run to come across in the seventh.
Justin Willis made his UConn debut on Friday by striking out the one batter he faced with runners at first and second in the eighth.
UConn scored three runs on six hits but the Red Raiders were spectacular on defense with four diving catches that robbed the Huskies of hits on Friday.
UConn looks to even the series on Saturday with a 3 PM ET first pitch from Dan Law Field.
