Huskies Fall in OT at UMass, 15-14

AMHERST, Mass. – For the second-straight game the UConn and Massachusetts women's lacrosse teams played an overtime contest with Saturday's decision going to the Minutewomen, 15-14, at Garber Field.
Saturday's game featured 11 ties and eight lead changes as UMass got the game-winner with just two seconds left in the first overtime with Olivia Muscella scoring her second of the day to deliver the win. Last weekend, UConn beat UMass on their home field, 12-11, in overtime.
The Huskies got a career-high four-goals from sophomore Kate Shaffer (West Hartford, Conn.) while junior Grace Coon (Marcellus, N.Y.) got her first goals on the season, scoring three times in the loss.
Senior Sydney Watson (Prince Fredrick, Md.) and junior Lia LaPrise (Windsor, Conn.) each had two goals with an assist. Watson also added 12 draw controls to her stat line
UConn led 4-3 at the 17 minute mark and then built their lead to 7-5 with five minutes left in the first half as Shaffer and Coon scored back-to-back. After leading 7-6 at the half, the Huskies built their lead to 9-7 in the opening 10 minutes of the second half on Watson and Palmucci's second goals of the game.
A three-goal UMass rally, two off the stick of Kelly Marra, gave the MInutewomen their first lead of the day, 10-9, with 18:04 left. The Huskies answered with two-straight from LaPrise and Shaffer but UMass again came back and took the lead 12-11 with 9:36 left.
UConn put together a three-goal run of their own with Shaffer getting her fourth followed by two-straight from Coon for a 14-12 lead with 6:41 left. UMass pulled the game even as Muscella scored at 5:07 and Kaitlyn Cerasi tied it at 4:01. The Huskies had a shot at a late game-winner but a LaPrise shot went off the post 17 seconds left.
UConn goaltender Landyn White (Alpharetta, Ga.) came up a career-high 16 saves for the Huskies.
UMass's Marra finished with five goals and two assists while Maddy Moloney scored twice and added four assists.
The Huskies will now move on to the BIG EAST schedule as they open up at Marquette next Friday, March 19 and Sunday, March 21.
