Softball Commences BIG EAST Play in Omaha

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team (7-9, 0-0 BIG EAST) is looking to continue its momentum and build off Wednesday's midweek game win as they travel to Omaha, Nebraska for a three-game set against the Creighton Bluejays (6-5, 2-1 BIG EAST) to open up league play.
The Huskies and Bluejays are locked into a Saturday afternoon double header, then close out the weekend series with an early Sunday morning game.

Numbers of Note…
- Freshman pitcher Payton Kinney (2.93 ERA, 59 2/3 innings) is currently tied for the BIG EAST lead with 58 strikeouts on the season.
- The pitching duo of Kinney and Meghan O'Neil (3.04 ERA, 53 innings) have combined to limiting opposing hitters to a .248 average and a 2.98 ERA, both ranking second in the conference.
- Additionally, the Huskies are 43-of-50 on their stolen base attempts, led by Aziah James (12, 1st in BIG EAST), Hollis Wivell (9, T-2nd in BIG EAST), and Briana Marcelino (8, 4th in BIG EAST).
Last Time Out…
An explosive six-run second inning propelled UConn (7-9) to a 10-7 road victory at Rhode Island (0-9) Wednesday afternoon at the URI Softball Complex. The Huskies were led to the victory via a trio of doubles from Reese Guevarra, Taylor Zatyk and Jana Sanden. Meghan O'Neil garnered the win and improved to 4-2 overall. She pitched the full seven and tossed nine strikeouts.
Scouting the Opponent…
- Creighton comes in following a 2-1 start to league play last weekend. The Bluejays swept Providence with a pair of shutouts during the first day of the series before falling by a single run in the finale against the Friars.
- The Bluejays rank at the top of the BIG EAST with a .304 team batting average and has scored 4.18 runs per game. Fifth-year senior Ashley Cantu leads the conference with a .514 batting average and ranks third with a .538 on-base percentage.
- Mikayla Santa Cruz paces the Bluejays and ranks fourth in the league with a 2.67 ERA during 18 1/3 innings pitched, while Parker Boyd owns a team-high 29 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings of work. Boyd ranks second in the BIG EAST by striking out 12 batters looking.
