UConn Softball Set for Carolina Classic

STORRS, Conn. – The Huskies are in North Carolina this weekend getting set to compete in the Carolina Classic. UConn will play scheduled games against Elon and host-school North Carolina on Friday, South Carolina on Saturday, then wrap up the tournament Sunday morning with a game against an opponent TBD. The Huskies officially close out the weekend with a matchup against the Duke Blue Devils later that afternoon. No fans will be allowed at the game.

Cleaning Up the Awards…
UConn has essentially cleaned up the BIG EAST awards during the first two weeks of the season. After helping lead the team to a 7-3 victory over No. 21 Baylor this past Saturday, senior Briana Marcelino and freshman Jana Sanden took home Big East Player of the Week honors. Marcelino garnered BIG EAST Player of the Week while Sanden was tabbed BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Payton Kinney was also named to the weekly honor roll.
Sanden and Marcelino join Kinney, who took home both BIG EAST Freshman and Pitcher of the Week after an incredible weekend performance in her collegiate debut.
Last Time Out…
The Huskies went 2-3 at the Lone Star State Invitational last weekend. After stumbling on day one, UConn rebounded on day two and picked up wins over Lamar and No. 21 Baylor. In the 7-3 victory over the Lady Bears, Marcelino went 2-for-2 from the plate and tallied a homer, two walks, three runs and two RBI's while Sanden went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double to help secure the win. UConn was tripped up by the seventh-ranked Longhorns in the Sunday finale.
Scouting the Opponent…
- Following a 4-1 opening weekend, UNC enters the weekend after closing Alabama's Crimson Classic with a 1-4 record. The Tar Heels picked up their lone win of the weekend against Troy, capping off Friday's split with an 8-2 win that featuring 12 hits….. UNC leads the all-time series, 8-3.
- #17 South Carolina posted a 6-1 record last week with the lone loss coming to No. 16 Duke in the finale of the Gamecock Invitational on Sunday. The Gamecocks outscored their foes 59-17 in the seven games with a .353 batting average….. South Carolina leads the all-time series, 6-0.
- Elon comes in after falling in its series finale at Clemson on Sunday, Feb. 28, as the Tigers completed the three-game set sweep with an 8-0 win over the Phoenix at McWhorter Stadium….. Elon leads the all-time series, 1-0.
- #14 Duke is coming off a 4-0 weekend where it defeated its second ranked opponent this season, topping No. 18 South Carolina, 5-1, to close out the Gamecock Invitational. Following a 2-0 performance over the weekend, senior Peyton St. George was named the ACC Pitcher of the Week….. Sunday will be the first-ever meeting between the schools.
