STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's and women's track & field teams will hit the road for a pair of meets this weekend. The Huskies will have athletes competing down in Tampa, Florida at the USF South Florida Invitational and another group headed down to New Haven for the SCSU Wilton Wright Tri-Meet.
"We got off to a great start last weekend and want to solidify that," Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy. "12 men and a relay in the top 32 in NCAA East, having that this early is phenomenal. And next weekend it will be more of an all-out meet for use back at home, and that will kind of put an end our early season. From there, we will start ramping up it headed toward the BIG EAST championship and regionals. This weekend, we want to solidify our strong start and find out some more things about our team."

The Huskies will have some of their top-athletes headed down to Florida with the focus on the field events. On the men's side seniors Matthew Brady (Biddeford, Maine) and Todd Stueber (Toms River, N.J.)) will throw in the shot put and discus. Senior Cameron Thompson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and junior Christopher Keegan (West Hartford, Conn.) will compete in the hammer throw, where he is currently 16th in the region, and junior Michael Jeffers (Clifton Park, N.Y.) will throw the javelin.Â
For the women, senior Chanell Botsis (Coquitlam, B.C.) and junior Mikyla Rogers (South Huntington, N.Y.) will throw in the hammer. Botsis was this week's BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week and leads the conference and is 33rd in the NCAA in the hammer this season.
In the jumps, senior Kelly Ward (Oxford, Conn.) and freshman Felicia Quainoo (Metuhen, N.J.) are set to compete in the long jump and fellow freshmen Zayin Roe (Richmond, Va.) and Jasmine Barrow (Athens, Ga.) will go in the triple jump. Senior Safir Scott (Greenwich, Conn.) will compete in the triple jump on the men's side.
In the pole vault, the Huskies two-top men and women are headed down south in sophomore Travis Snyder (Saco, Maine) and junior Tyler Hrbek (Northvale, N.J.) and junior Emma Chee (Bainbridge Island, Wash.)  and senior Laurel Bailey (Shelton, Conn.). Hrbek and Snyder are both tied for 18th in the NCAA east region currently.
On the track, junior Wellington Ventura (Cresskill, N.J.) will run again in the 400-meter hurdles, an event he is still fairly new to, having never competed in it until getting to UConn. He heads into the weekend with the eighth fastest time in the NCAA east region right now.   Classmate Noah Woodman (Hampstead, N.H.) will run the 200-meter dash, where he is ranked 14th in the NCAA east region heading in.
In the women's 400 meters, junior Shanelle Colmon (East Brunswick, N.J.) will run after a strong opening race last week at home. Ward will pull double duty and also run in the 200-meter dash while freshman Brianna Davis (Bay Shore, N.Y.) set to run in the 100-meter dash.
In the 800 meters, the senior-freshman combo of senior Amy Piccolo (Walpole, Mass.) and sophomore Elise O'Leary (Milton, Mass.) are set to compete. For the men, sophomore Stephen Sutton (Tolland, Conn.) and freshman Mahamed Sharif (Westbrook, Maine)
On Saturday, UConn will send 22 student-athletes on both the men's and women's teams to compete at SCSU.
