VILLANOVA, Pa. – UConn senior Sydney Watson (Prince Fredrick, Md.) and junior Grace Coon (Marcellus, N.Y.) each scored six goals to fuel the Huskies to a 14-7 BIG EAST win at Villanova on Friday afternoon.
The Huskies jump back into the win column and improve to 5-2 in the BIG EAST and 9-4 overall with the win. The Wildcats are 5-8 overall and 3-4 in the league.
Watson would add an assist to her stat totals to finish with a seven-point afternoon while her six goals matched her season-high. Coon set a new career-high mark with her six tallies, which came on seven shots.
After the Wildcats scored the game's first two goals three minutes in, UConn's Watson and Coon fueled an eight-goal Husky run to grab the lead back for good. Sophomore Kyra Place (Enola, Pa.) got UConn on the scoreboard and then Watson and Coon took over, combining for seven more as the Huskies built an 8-2 lead with 8:44 left in the half. The Wildcats tightened up defensively and kept the Huskies off the scoreboard the rest of the half and put three on the board to trail 8-5 at the break.
Defensively, the Huskies held Villanova to just two goals in the second half and junior goaltender Landyn White (Alpharetta, Ga.) finished with an 11 save afternoon.
After Coon scored her fourth to open the second half, the Wildcats scored at 28:22 on Katie Comerford's second of three, to pull within 9-6 but that would be as close as Villanova would come the rest of the way. Coon scored two-straight to make it 11-16 with just over 21 minutes to play.
Comerford's third came at 13:08 but that would be it for the Wildcat offense on the day and Watson sandwiched her fifth and sixth goals around one from freshman Lauren Barry (Wilbraham, Mass.) Place would add an assist to her totals while senior Stephaine Palmucci (Herndon, Va.) had two assists for the Huskies.
UConn and Villanova will close out their weekend series on Sunday from Villanova Stadium at 12 noon.
