BOWLING GREEN, Fla. – Led by freshman Caleb Manuel and junior Jared Nelson, the UConn golf team will enter postseason play on Monday in the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship at the Streamsong Resort in Bowling Green, Fla.
The three-day, 54-hole stroke play event is the first BIG EAST Championship for the Huskies since UConn rejoined the league for the 2020-21 year. The winning team, as well as the event's individual medalist, will advance to the NCAA Regionals, scheduled for May 17-19 at one of six regional sites.
"We are very excited to be back competing for the Big East Championship," UConn coach Dave Pezzino said. "We are so grateful that the league found a wonderful replacement course during the COVID-19 pandemic. Streamsong is an outstanding course."
Joining UConn in the nine-team field are teams from Butler, Creighton, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Seton Hall, Villanova and Xavier.
"The guys are looking forward to competing against this outstanding field," Pezzino said.
Manuel (Topsham, Me.) enters BIG EAST play coming off back-to-back top five finishes at the Mountaineer Invitational and the Rutherford Intercollegiate. He leads the Huskies in scoring, averaging 72.8 per round, with 10 rounds of par or better, two Top 10 and five Top 20 finishes.
Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) is just behind Manuel in scoring, averaging 73.6 per round, with six rounds of par or better, two Top 10 and three Top 20 finishes, including a tie for first place at the Bash at the Beach on March 15-16.
Rounding out the UConn lineup at the BIG EAST Championship will be freshman Jimmy Paradise (Tampa, Fla.), averaging 74.8 with one Top 20 finish, freshman Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.), averaging 75.3 with two Top 20 finishes and senior Rodrigo Sanchez (Santo Domingo, D.R.), averaging 75.8, with two Top 10 and two Top 20 finishes.
"We have had some slow starts this semester, but our guys corrected that last week (at the Rutherford)," Pezzino said. "I am planning on us taking that momentum into the BIG EAST Championship."
