STORRS, Conn. - UConn sophomore Kyra Place (Enola, Pa.) earned the BIG EAST Women's Lacrosse Attacker of the Week award after helping guide the Huskies to a two-game sweep over Georgetown at home over the weekend in the final series of the regular season. It is the first career award for Place.
Place tied for the BIG EAST lead in goals last week with nine as the Huskies earned a pivotal sweep of Georgetown to secure second place in the BIG EAST standings and the No. 2 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP. Place was clutch in both games, scoring the game winner in both contests, including Friday's dramatic 15-14 overtime decision. Place scored the game winner with 12 seconds left in the first overtime frame. She was also credited with the game winner in Sunday's 16-12 victory. The sophomore added three ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover over the weekend.
Place and the rest of the Huskies will get ready for the championship tournament as they will face Georgetown in the semifinals down in Washington, D.C. on Thursday, May 6. The Huskies and Hoya will follow top-seeded Denver and Villanova's semifinal match-up with the opening draw schedule for 7:30 pm and will be available on the BIG EAST Digital Network. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday, May 8 at 12 noon and will be carried live on FS2.
