Huskies Head to UVA, UGA and SCSU This Weekend

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn track & field team will use a split squad this weekend as they send athletes to compete at three different meets in what will be their final tune-up before the 2021 BIG EAST Outdoor Championship in two weeks.
"We are really looking forward to this weekend and our last competition before we go into the championship season," stated associate head coach Rich Miller. "Our kids are really excited to get out and take another step. We have had some great competitions throughout this season so far. We are split up among some different locations to really fit our individual needs as prepare for those championships. So, really excited to see what we can do and looking forward to the weekend."
UConn will send a contingent of athletes to compete on the track and in the field events to the two-day Torrin Lawrence Memorial at the University of Georgia on Friday and Saturday. The event will be available to stream on ESPN.com.
A smaller group will head down state to Southern Connecticut State University for the James Barber Tri-Meet on Friday, April 30 and a group of distance runners will head to the Virginia Grand Prix at the University of Virginia on Saturday, May 1. Saturday's meet at UVA will also be available to stream online at ESPN.com
The Huskies head into their final weekend of competition before the conference championship continuing their hold on the top-spot in the USTFCCCA Northeast regional rankings. The UConn men are on top for the fifth-straight week while the women make it three-straight weeks at the top of the poll.
UConn will have the majority of their lineup competing this weekend as they take aim at final preparations for their return to the BIG EAST Championship on May 14 and 15.
Heading into this weekend the UConn men have four individuals currently leading the BIG EAST event rankings while also owning the top-two times in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays this spring so far. The Huskies have been dominating the field event conference rankings all season and own the top spot in all eight events and are second in the decathlon.
Senior Daniel Claxton (Nesconset, N.Y.) took home this week's BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week award after winning in the high jump at the UConn Northeast Invitational for the third time this spring with his best jump this outdoor season at 2.14 meters. He is atop the BIG EAST rankings and ranks 37th nationally.
The UConn women have four athletes at the top of the BIG EAST rankings in the field events and 10 others who are among the top-five performance wise in their events this spring. On the track, junior Shanelle Colmon (East Brunswick, N.J.) is coming off a double win weekend in the 200 and 400 meters, where she ranks 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the BIG EAST rankings. Overall, seven different Huskies rank in the top-five in their respective events in the league. Senior Mia Nahom (New Milford, Conn.) is in the top five in the 1,500 meters, the 5,000 meters and the 3,000-meter steeplechase, an event she will run with classmate Daniel Jordan (Clifton Park, N.Y.) this weekend at UVA. The duo share the fourth best time in the BIG EAST this year.
