STORRS, Conn. - Sophie Hamilton continued her torrid pace through the season, as the sophomore posted her second hat-trick in the last four games, and also contributed three assists, to lead the No. 7 University of Connecticut field hockey team to a convincing 8-0 victory over Villanova on Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia. Â
With the win, UConn's fourth-straight, the Huskies improve to 8-1 overall on the year and 7-1 in BIG EAST play. The Wildcats slip to 4-7 overall and 3-6 in the league.
Hamilton got the scoring started less than five minutes into the contest off an assist from Vivienne Tucker, which ran Hamilton's goal-scoring streak to four-consecutive games. She added two more goals in the second half, which marked her fifth multi-goal performance in nine games this season.Â
Hamilton is now up to 14 goals and 12 assists this season.
Freshman Aiyi Young netted the first goal of her career, off an assist from Jessica Dembrowski, which gave the Huskies a 2-0 edge at the 22:29 mark. The flood gates opened after that as Young assisted on Chiara Ma's first career goal less than two minutes later and Young would add another assist less than four minutes later on Claire Jandewerth's penalty corner goal, which increased UConn's lead to 4-0 heading into halftime.
Sophomore Erica Solomen, who earned her second start of the season on Saturday, helped the Huskies finish strong as she scored goals at 40:55 and 42:54 and then assisted on Hamilton's third goal of the game at 47:55. Â
Solomen is now up to four goals on the season and the assist was the first of her career.
UConn out-shot Villanova 20-4 on the afternoon and held a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal. Connecticut also created nine penalty corner chances and allowed Villanova to create only three opportunities.
The Huskies and the Wildcats will square-off again tomorrow, as UConn will seek its fifth-straight victory. Game time is set for 12 p.m. in the City of Brotherly Love.
