STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Freshman Claire van den Noort notched a hat trick as the sixth-ranked UConn field hockey team beat Rider, 5-0, in the NCAA First Round Friday in State College.

Sophomore Sophie Hamilton added a pair of goals and two assists vs. Rider. Morgan Kaufmann added two assists while Kourtney Kennedy and Erica Solomen each had one assist.

van den Noort started the scoring with just nine seconds remaining in the first quarter, deflecting in a shot from Kaufmann. She added her second goal in the second quarter off an assist from Solomen.

Hamilton notched her first goal off a penalty corner in the third quarter. She added an assist on van den Noort's third goal at 56:06 in the fourth.

Hamilton capped the scoring with just nine second left in the game.

UConn outshot Rider, 19-4, and held a 7-2 advantage in corners.

The Huskies boast a rich NCAA Tournament history, which includes 32 appearances and national championships in 1981, 1985, 2013, 2014 and 2017. UConn owns the fifth-highest winning percentage in NCAA Tournament play at .644 (47-26) and its 47 victories rank fourth in tournament history.

The Connecticut defense held the opposition scoreless in 11 of the 13 games it has played this season and the Huskies are outshooting the opposition by a 259-44 count.

Cheyenne Sprecher made two saves in her 10^th shutout of the season.

UConn will face third-seeded Louisville in the NCAA Second Round on Sunday at 3 p.m. in State College.
