Huskies Close Out Regular Season at Villanova

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn (20-15, 12-6 BIG EAST) softball teams hits the road for the City of Brotherly Love as the Huskies prepare to face off against the Villanova (29-12, 12-2 BIG EAST) Wildcats this weekend at the Villanova Softball Complex to close out the regular season.

Last Time Out…
The Huskies are coming off a series win against Seton Hall after winning two of three. UConn grabbed a 3-1 win in the series opener before splitting the Thursday doubleheader (1-2, L; 6-2, W). With Wednesday night's win, the Huskies locked up a spot in the 2021 BIG EAST Softball Tournament.
UConn Notes…
- UConn ranks 7th in the NCAA and first in the BIG EAST in stolen bases/game with an average of 2.26 per contest (79-of-94) overall on bag swipes. Individually, the Huskies have three players tied for the BIG EAST lead with 16 stolen bases: Aziah James, Briana Marcelino and Reese Guevarra. Hollis Wivell is the fourth Husky to have double-digit stolen bases with a dozen. Additionally, the Huskies' 150 runs scored and 129 RBI rank third in the conference while their 30 homeruns are second to only Villanova.
- Freshman pitcher Payton Kinney (2.82 ERA) is first in the league in opposing batting average (.206), second in innings pitched (109.1). She also ranks third with 109 strikeouts. The pitching trio of Kinney, Meghan O'Neil (3.17 ERA, 106.0 innings (2nd in BE)), and Marybeth Olson (2.75 ERA, 20.1 innings) have combined to limit opposing hitters to a .241 batting average and a 2.97 ERA, both second in the conference, respectively.
- Jana Sanden is T-2nd in the BIG EAST with 8 home runs. Briana Marcelino and Devon Casazza have both hit seven dingers - tied for fifth in the conference… Reese Guevarra is T-3rd with 47 hits, T-2nd with 11 doubles.
Scouting the Wildcats…
- Villanova is coming off a heartbreaking 10-inning loss against Seton back on May 2. Despite the loss the Wildcats won the weekend series, two games to one.
- The Wildcats lead the BIG EAST in seven major offensive categories. Villanova is led at the plate and in the circle by Paige Rauch. She sports a .434 average with eight home runs and 37 RBIs to go along with a 1.96 ERA and 153 strikeouts through 128.2 innings pitched.
- Raunch was named to the weekly honor roll after batting .500 on the week with seven RBI and four doubles. She also pitched to a 3.15 ERA with 13 strikeouts while posting a 1-0 record at Seton Hall.
