UConn Wraps Up Regular Season Sunday Afternoon

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The UConn softball (20-18, 12-9 BIG EAST) team played a tight one against Villanova (32-12, 15-2) on Sunday afternoon at the Villanova Softball Complex in the regular season finale for both sides.
The tick-for-tack match up saw the Huskies get on the scoreboard first in the top of the third. UConn had been aggressive from the first pitch, and reaped the reward in the top of the third beginning with Marcelino's at-bat. Being the second batter in the order, Marcelino slapped the ball up the middle to get the Huskies on base. Reese Guevarra followed with a two bagger to left center and Marcelino came around for the game's first run. UConn doubled its lead on Sami Barnett's single up the middle then Devon Casazza joined in on the hitting party and smacked a 3RBI bomb over the left field wall to put the Huskies ahead by five. Villanova immediately responded with a run of its own in the corresponding half inning to pull within a run, 5-4.
The teams repeated this dance in the fourth, as UConn was able to add a pair to its cause on a run scored by Aziah James and a sac fly from Jana Sanden that brought Marcelino in. The Wildcats managed to get one back on a bases loaded walk to cut the deficit to two.
Villanova added a trio to its efforts in the bottom of the fifth via a fielder's choice and a 2RBI single up the middle. They increased their lead to two, the final margin, after scoring another in the sixth.
Payton Kinney got the nod to start in the circle for UConn and pitched three innings with seven strikeouts. She was relieved by Meghan O'Neil who tossed the final three frames while striking out four to wrap up the game for the UConn pitching staff.
