STORRS, Conn. - UConn Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association Northeast Region Coach of the Year for the 2021 outdoor season. He follows up winning the honor for the 2021 indoor season as well.
"A Coach of the Year award is a tribute to the hard work and success of the people that the head coach sees and depends on every day," stated Roy. "Never was that more evident this year, when a series of health challenges this spring prevented me from giving the same level of energy and commitment that I am used to. To say that our track and field staff, medical personnel and administrators picked up the slack is like saying the pandemic was a small challenge. I want to thank and recognize those people; Patti Kula, Abby Fischer and Dr Deena Casiero from sports medicine. Kim Curry, Rachel Scott and Ellen Tripp from the SASP program.  Strength coach Mike Rozzi, and especially our coaching staff, Lindsay Crevoiserat, Selwyn Maxwell, Erica Ferguson, Pat Peterson and Kaitlyn Hebert."
"I would like to especially like to recognize and thank Associate Director Rich Miller," commented Roy. "In reality, this award is his. With the help of the staff, he planned and implemented a competitive schedule that often didn't exist two weeks before the competitions occurred. Under his direction, the men's team competed brilliantly at the Big East Championships, and sent more athletes to the NCAA than ever before . Thanks to everyone who made this season the best in the history of the men's program, and congrats to Coach Miller for his Coach of the Year award!"Â
Roy and his coaching staff led the Huskies to the team title at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships with conference record 294 points thanks to 12 event champions. UConn had the High Point Performer of the Meet, Track Athlete of the Meet and Field Athlete of the Meet, while the Huskies took home Coaching Staff of the Year honors. The Huskies were the No. 1 ranked team in the USTFCCCA Northeast Regional poll every week this spring and also have four top-20 #EventSquad Rankings.
The Huskies have three student-athletes headed to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon this week in decathlete Jordan Torney (Toms RIver, N.J.), long jumper Safir Scott (Greenwich, Conn.) and pole vaulter Travis Snyder (Saco, Maine). Â
