STORRS, Conn. – Fueled by a pair of first-half goals, the UConn women's soccer team shut out Syracuse, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Morrone Stadium.
Junior Cara Jordan started the game with a statement, scoring off a rebounding in the 2nd minute, while senior Duda Santin added another finish inside the six-yard box in the 30th minute.
Sophomore Lucy Cappadona put the exclamation point on the afternoon, finishing with a sliding strike in front of the net off a free kick in the 59th minute to seal the 3-0 outcome.
Working in transition, sophomore Jada Konte weaved her down the right wing before fending off a defender to find sophomore Jaydah Bedoya, who took a touch before lining a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that bounced off the Orange keeper. An oncoming Jordan slotted the rebound in from the six to make it a 1-0 game just under two minutes into action.
The Huskies kept the pressure on as Bedoya continued to wreak havoc on the wing and sent a cross towards the six-yard box, where Santin flicked a one-timer that snuck inside the right post to further the gap to 2-0 in the 33rd minute.
UConn held a commanding 12-5 lead in shots, including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal, as it held onto a 2-0 advantage at the break.
Working off a free kick in the 59th minute, junior Emma Zaccagnini struck the ball from 35 yards out, and Cappadona split herself between an Orange defender and the keeper for a sliding finish right in front of the net.
The Huskies will return to Morrone Stadium next weekend as they host Buffalo for their non-conference final on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.
