STORRS, Conn. - Opening up the sixth annual Dog Pound Challenge, the UConn Volleyball team powered its way to a 3-0 sweep over Bryant.
Junior Jasmine Davis paced the Huskies with 12 kills and two blocks, and senior Kennadie Jake-Turner followed with 11 kills and another pair of blocks. Graduate student McKayla Wuensch led all players with 38 assist and junior Karly Berkland recorded a game-high 16 digs.
After a 40-minute delay to start, UConn and Bryant put on a show as they went back-and-forth the first eight points, and neither team led by more than two until the Bulldogs eked out a 13-10 edge. UConn worked back to knot scoreboard for ninth time at 22-all. Following a service error, Wuensch and Jake-Turner went for two straight kills to put the set away.
Bryant took advantage of back-to-back attacking errors to take a 7-2 advantage in the following set. Trailing 19-15, the Huskies erupted with a 7-0 run, highlighted by a pair of aces from senior Caylee Parker, while six kills apiece from Davis and junior Allie Garland secured another set.
UConn maintained the hot hand as Davis paced a 6-2 spurt in the third set, putting the Bulldogs on their heels as they burned a timeout. Bryant came within one late in the set, but the Huskies closed the match with a 4-1 streak to improve to 3-1 at Gampel Pavilion this season.
The Huskies will return with a pair of matches tomorrow, starting with NJIT at 12:30 p.m. before taking on Yale in the final match of the weekend at 7 p.m.
