UConn Falls to Butler in Conference Opener

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – The UConn men's soccer team fell to Butler 1-0 in the Big East Conference opener on Saturday night. The Huskies drop to 3-2 on the season.
The game began with plenty of physicality, with the teams combing for six fouls in the opening 20 minutes. The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 21st minute with the first shot on goal. The Huskies offense would be stifled until the 35th minute, when sophomore Jayden Reid recorded UConn's first shot of the night, which was saved by the Butler goalkeeper.
Butler would take a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Huskies only managed a single shot in the opening 45 minutes, while Butler tallied two shots, one on goal. There were eight combined fouls in the first half and four yellow cards given.
UConn would get a jump on the Bulldogs to start the second half, with senior Felix Metzler creating space and taking a shot that deflected out for a corner. The set piece was cleared away by the Butler defense, but a positive start for the Huskies.
The Huskies maintained plenty of possession in the second half but were not able to break through the Butler defense for a shot on goal. UConn would have a flurry of chances in the 88th minute, as Metzler drove toward the goal and sent in a cross that bounced around the box. Sophomore Moussa Wade found the loose ball, but saw his shot get blocked away. The Huskies would fall to Butler, 1-0.

UConn returns home on Tuesday, September 21st to host Dartmouth. Kickoff is slated for 7:00pm at Morrone Stadium at the Rizza Family Sports Complex.
