STORRS, Conn. – The longtime rivalry between the UConn and Georgetown men's basketball teams writes another chapter on Tuesday, when the BIG EAST rivals clash at Gampel Pavilion (8:30 p.m., CBS SN).
The No. 20/19 Huskies (13-4 overall, 4-2 BIG EAST) will be looking to extend a streak that currently boasts three straight wins and four victories in their last five games. Georgetown (6-10, 0-5), the defending BIG EAST Tournament champion, will be out to break a six-game losing streak.
It is the 69th game in a series that dates back to 1958-59, with Georgetown holding a 36-32 edge. UConn, however, has won three of the last four meetings, and has a 17-12 edge against the Hoyas at home, 4-1 at Gampel.
UConn, which jumped up five spots in the AP poll and six in the USA Today Coaches poll this week, is using a balanced offensive attack featuring three players averaging over 15 points per game in BIG EAST Conference games, the only league team with that statistic. Senior Tyrese Martin ranks eighth in the league in scoring (15.7), sophomore forward Adama Sanogo ranks ninth (15.6) and grad R.J. Cole ranks 10th (15.2). Sanogo is also first in the league in overall rebounding (12.0), second in field goal percentage (.516), and second in blocked shots (3.4).
Besides that trio, the remainder of the regular UConn starting lineup includes grad Isaiah Whaley and sophomore Andre Jackson. They form one of five starting lineups UConn has used this season, but this starting lineup boasts a record of 9-0.
The Huskies, coming off back-to-back wins over Butler last week, have a plus-7.5 points per game and a plus-6.8 rebounding edge over opponents in BIG EAST games.
Georgetown guard Aminu Mohammed was the coaches' pick as Preseason  Freshman of the Year and he has only enhanced his chances by leading the Hoyas in scoring (13.6) and rebounding (8.2). The Hoyas also have four additional double-figure scorers – grad Donald Carey (13.3), grad Kaiden Rice (13.3), sophomore Dante Harris (12.9) and sophomore Collin Holloway (10.1).
Following Tuesday's game, UConn will have one more game in January, Saturday at DePaul, before it faces an extremely busy February, with nine games squeezed into a 27-day span.
