WSOC Earns Critical Point vs. Providence

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's soccer team (7-6-3, 3-4-2 BIG EAST) tied Providence (4-9-4, 2-4-3 BIG EAST), 0-0, to remain tied for the sixth and final spot in the BIG EAST Championship.
The Huskies led the way with a 13-9 edge in shots and freshman Chioma Okafor led the way with five shots on the afternoon.Â
Senior Cara Jordan added three shots including a team-high two shots on goal.Â
The UConn offense was able to create some solid opportunities to try and break the scoreless tie. Sophie McCarthy nearly gave the Huskies the lead on a free kick from just outside the box. The Walpole, Mass. native struck it well but sailed it just over the bar at 12:32 in the first half.Â
Defensively, the Huskies were strong throughout the match, containing the Providence Friars to five shots on goal.Â
Kaitlyn Mahoney secured her second-straight shutout with a five save performance.
Next up, the Huskies wrap up the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. against Seton Hall for Senior Night. The Huskies will honor its senior class prior to the match.Â
UConn can clinch a BIG EAST Tournament bid with a win on Thursday against the Pirates.Â
