STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut women's hockey team fell to the University of Maine Friday night. Sophomore Tia Chan made 40 saves in the loss.
The first period was a defensive battle as both teams would rely heavily on their netminders and defense. Jordan Mattison of Maine and Tia Chan would step up to the challenge, making difficult saves to prevent the first goal. Tia Chan would go on to make 10 saves in the first period, and Mattison would make 11. The Huskies would also help Chan out in front of the net, blocking three shots. Both teams would head into the period break scoreless.
The second period would be very similar to the first with both teams looking to pressure the opposing goaltender and score the first goal of the game. Tia Chan would make multiple back-to-back saves in the period to blank the Black Bears, while the Huskeis would have multiple fast breaks and breakaways which would be turned away by Mattison. In the second period, Mattison would make 15 saves while Chan would make 17 saves as both teams would head into the third period scoreless.
In the third period, a Maine penalty would put UConn on the power play, however the Main defense would kill the penalty through blocked shots and timely saves. Maine would take the lead late in the third period when a puck would deflect off the boards right in front of the net to Luisa Welcke. UConn looked to even things up but Jorden Mattison would keep the Huskies scoreless to help Maine secure the victory.
