WSOC Loses In Penalty Kicks in BIG EAST Quarterfinals

JAMAICA, N.Y. - The No. 6 seeded UConn women's soccer team (8-6-4) had its 2022 season come to an end after losing a penatly kick shootout, 4-2, to No. 3 seeded St. John's on Sunday at Belson Stadium.Â
After a scoreless opening half, the Huskies jumped in front at the 51:17 mark of the second half on the sixth goal of the year for Chioma Okafor. Defender Laci Lewis placed a perfect service into the box that Okafor was able to head home for her fourth goal in the last two games.
St. John's responded 18 minutes later with an equalizer off a corner kick to make it a 1-1 match.
The game remained 1-1 until the end of regulation and after two 10-minute overtime periods. Kaitlyn Mahoney was solid in net, making some big time stops late in the second half and in the overtime session.
With the score still 1-1 after 110 minutes, the match moved to a penalty kick shootout, a best-out-of-five format.
St. John's made four of its five kicks to advance to the BIG EAST Semifinals, 4-2.
