Huskies Earn First BIG EAST Win Over Xavier

STORRS, Conn. – Four Huskies had double-digit kills as the UConn volleyball team (7-10, 1-5) picked up its first BIG EAST Conference win of the season with a four-set (25-19, 25-27, 25-21, 25-17) victory over Xavier (10-6, 3-3) Saturday evening in Gampel Pavilion.
Senior Allie Garland led the Huskies with a career-high 16 kills. Fellow seniors Jasmine Davis and Caylee Parker had 15 kills each while Kennadie Jake-Turner had 12 kills and hit .667 vs. the Musketeers.
UConn had a season-high 84 digs vs. Xavier.
Four Huskies finished with double-digits in the match: Parker (15 kills 16 digs), Davis (15 kills, 13 digs), senior Madi Whitmire (45 kills, 19 digs) and senior Karly Berkland (24 digs, 12 assists).
The Huskies hit .415 in the first set with 20 kills as they won the game, 25-19. Jake-Turner, Garland and Davis each had five kills. UConn controlled the tempo of the set, and a 3-0 run put the home team ahead, 11-6. Jake-Turner had back-to-back kills to put UConn ahead, 16-11. The Musketeers were able to get within two points, but Garland had two late kills and Parker had both the set point and set-winning kills.
UConn dropped its only set of the night to Xavier in extra points, 27-25. The set had 16 ties and six lead changes. Parker paced UConn with five kills in the game.
The Huskies returned to form in the third set, winning 25-21. Garland hit .417 with six kills in the third. The teams stayed close early, but a 4-0 run anchored by solid serving from Davis put UConn ahead, 14-10. Garland put the Huskies at set point, 24-20, and Parker again had the set-winning kill.
UConn's fourth set win was its most decisive of the match, 25-17. Parker started the set serving and helped the Huskies to a 5-0 run. Davis had back-to-back kills to put the Huskies ahead, 11-4. Whitmire had a solo block as UConn pushed the lead to 17-11. A Xavier attack error put UConn at match point, and Garland knocked down the final kill of the match, 25-17.
The Huskies are back in Gampel Pavilion next weekend to host Villanova on Thursday and Georgetown on Saturday.
