STORRS, Conn. - The UConn women's cross country team will head down to the Bronx on Friday morning to run in the 2022 NCAA Northeast Regional Championship at Van Cortlandt Park.
The Huskies will line-up as one of 42 teams competing to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship field. The 6K race will step-off at 11 am. Columbia University will serve as the host of this year's race. Fans, spectators and teams looking for information related to Friday's NCAA Regional can access it on a dedicated microsite on GoColumbiaLions.com. The site includes directions to Van Cortlandt Park, course maps, travel information, team entries and more.
UConn is coming off a third place finish at the 2022 BIG EAST Championship two weeks ago and return to the Van Cortlandt Park course they competed at earlier this season in the Iona Meet of Champions. The Huskies come into Friday's race ranked fourth in the latest USTFCCCA Northeast Regional rankings. BIG EAST runner-up Providence is ranked in the top spot and followed by Syracuse and Harvard.
A pair of Huskies garnered All-BIG EAST honors at the title race two weeks ago in grad student Randi Burr (Westerly, RI) and sophomore Chloe Thomas (Dundas, Ontario). Burr had a seventh-place finish and clocked in with a new PR in a 6K race with a time of 20:30.8. Thomas finished 15th overall in the field, posting a time of 20:58.0.
At last season's NCAA Regional race in Boston, the Huskies finished fourth overall in a 36 team field while three Huskies finished in the top-15. Thomas earned All-Northeast honors with a 14th place finish in the race.
There are nine regional races across the country on Friday. The top two teams in each regional secure automatic bids to the NCAA Championship. The first four regional finishers not from an automatic qualifying or at-large team also secure an auto-bid to the championships. If a team doesn't secure an automatic bid, it will have to rely on the NCAA DI Cross Country Subcommittee to select it as one of the 13 at-large teams. Only two individual at-larges are selected, making a strong regional performance pivotal to advancing toward a national title.
The NCAA Cross Country Championships will be held in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Nov. 19.
