STORRS, Conn. – Adama Sanogo poured in 27 points to lead five players in double figures as the UConn men's basketball team shrugged off some early-season injuries to key players and rolled over Boston University, 86-57, Friday night at Gampel Pavilion.
Sanogo also pulled down 15 rebounds to record the 11th double-double of his career and highlighted the night with the first two three-pointers of his career. Two assists, one steal and one block filled up the stat sheet for the Huskies' dominant forward.
In two games this season, the UConn junior is averaging 23.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and is shooting a torrid .769 from the floor (20-of-26).
UConn (2-0), missing starters Andre Jackson Jr., Jordan Hawkins and Samson Johnson because of injuries, still wasted no time in taking command, scoring the first 11 points of the game and building leads of 20-2, 24-6, and 29-10 before settling for a 40-23 halftime lead.
Sanogo had his double-double by halftime with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
"We knew we had to play elite defense," UConn Coach Dan Hurley said. "We were without a lot of firepower and a lot of talent. We knew we had a lot of angst going into this because of their three-point shooting, but I'm just thrilled the way the group responded at both ends of the court."
Sanogo had plenty of help as senior teammates Tristen Newton and Nahiem Alleyne each scored 11 points and freshman Donovan Clingan and redshirt freshman Alex Karaban, celebrating his 20th birthday, added 10 apiece.
Boston University (1-1), led by grad student Walter Whyte (19 points) began to make some shots in the second half, but never threatened the UConn lead. The Terriers did come within 53-41 with 13:08 remaining, but UConn went on a quick 10-0 run to put the game out of reach.
For the second straight game, nine Huskies hit the scoreboard and everybody available saw playing time.
The Huskies shot a sizzling 56.4 percent from the floor and 47.6 from three-point range. Even more impressively on defense, UConn held BU to 34.0 percent shooting overall and only 16.7 percent from three-point range. The Huskies won the rebound battle, 41-29.
UConn continues its season-opening, five-game homestand on Tuesday, Nov. 15, when it plays host to the University at Buffalo at the XL Center in Hartford at 7 p.m.
