WEST POINT, N.Y. – UConn freshman running back Victor Rosa (Bristol, CT) ran for a career-high 111 yards and a touchdown but Army's Braheam Murphy had 124 yards and a 75-yard touchdown to help lead the Black Knights to a 34-17 win over the Huskies Saturday afternoon in front of 31,229 at Michie Stadium in West Point, NY.
The Huskies see their regular season come to an end at 6-6 and being bowl eligible will wait to see if they will get one more game on the schedule during the season when bowl selections are announced in the coming weeks. UConn's 6-6 record is their best season since the 2015 season when they were 6-7 and played in the St. Petersburg Bowl.
Army improved to 4-6 with the win as the Black Knights ran for 320 yards on the day, accounting for all of their offense. Quarterback Tyhier Tyler finished with 70 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns.
The Black Knights opened the game with a special teams spark on the game's first possession on a blocked punt for a touchdown. Lined-up to punt on 4th-and-nine at their own 19-yard line, Army Jabril Williams burst up the middle and blocked the George Caratan (Delano, CA) attempt with Miles Stewart falling on the loose ball in the end zone for a 7-0 lead.
On their next two possessions the Huskies saw touchdowns overturned on review and came away with just three points in the end. A seven-yard run by Rosa to the left pylon was then ruled out at the half yard line and Army's defense held and forced a 26-yard Noe Ruelas (West Hartford, CT) field goal. On UConn's next possession, a Robert Burns (Miami, FL) scored from five yards out but on review was ruled out at the half yard line again. Army's defense was up to the task once again and got a goal line stand with a stop on fourth down.
The Huskies finally hit pay-dirt on their next drive as Rosa broke off left tackle and up the sidelines for a 43-yard score, his team-best ninth of the season, for a 10-7 lead with 3:12 left. The Black Knights answered with an 11-play drive that covered 75 yards and ended with Jemel Jones scoring from a yard out with 18 seconds before half for a 13-10 lead.
UConn quarterback Zion Turner (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) took the Huskies on a nine-play drive that covered 70 yards and capped it with a one-yard plunge to take a 17-13 lead on their first possession of the third quarter.
From there it was all Army with Murphy ripping off a 75-yard run for six on the first play of the Black Knight's ensuing drive and never trailed again. Tyler scored his first of the day to close the third quarter putting Army up 27-13. Following a Zion Turner interception in the fourth, Tyler put the game away with his second score with 4:23 left to go up 34-17.
The Huskies had a pair of turnovers in the loss and committed 11 penalties.
Defensively, junior linebacker Jackson Mitchell (Ridgefield, CT) matched his career-high with 16 tackles in the loss, giving him a career-best 133 for the season. Fellow linebacker Brandon Bouyer-Randle (Battle Creek, Mich.) made a career-best 13 tackles.
