UConn Advances to the Big East Semifinals with Five Set Thriller Against St. John's

Storrs, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team won in a thrilling five setter against St. John's on Wednesday afternoon.
The first set was all UConn. The Huskies began the set with a big block by Caylee Parker and Taylor Pannell to put them up 3-1 early in the set. UConn would force St. John's to take a timeout at 6-2 UConn, and the Huskies would follow that up with a 3-0 scoring run at 12-7. Then, after a string of quality plays, the Huskies found themselves in control of the first set finishing it off at 25-18.Â
In the second set, the tides would turn for UConn. The Red Storm would take an early lead at 10-6 before UConn would take a timeout. The Huskies would keep it close as they would go on a 4-0 scoring run to only be down by one. UConn would force St. John's to take a timeout as UConn would take the lead at 18-17. However, the Red Storm would stop the scoring runs and would round out the second set 25-22.Â
The blocks and the kills would come in bunches throughout the game, but the Red Storm would end the Huskies' successful effort of blocks in the third set. UConn finished the game with 12 blocks opposed to six from St. John's. Allie Garland would also get her 10th kill of the game in the third set. However, the Red Storm would hold off the Huskies and would cap off the third set 25-18 to take a 2-1 set lead.Â
Then, UConn came roaring back in the last two sets. In the fourth set, the Huskies would go on another 3-0 scoring run to force St. John's to take a timeout at 13-9. Pannell would help the Huskies even it up at 2 sets apiece with one of her 10 kills in the game by taking the fourth set 25-17. Â
Parker, Pannell, Garland, and Jasmine Davis would all tack on double digit kills by the end of the game to help the Huskies get the advantage over the Red Storm. Parker, Davis, and Garland would all have 14 kills while Pannell would finish with 10 kills along with six blocks. Madi Whitmire also contributed 55 assists in the game. UConn would go on to take the winner take all set 17-15.Â
