STORRS, Conn. – The UConn track and field program will split their squads up this weekend to take part in a pair of meets, heading to New York City's historic Armory for the Rutgers Open and up to Boston University for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
The Rutgers Open will take place on Friday and Saturday, February 11 and 12, at the historic Armory. The women will compete at the BU meet on Friday while the men head to Boston on Saturday.
"Not too early to start getting excited about the BIG EAST championship in two weeks," commented Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy. "I thought we had a great team meet on both sides last week and heading into this weekend, we are doing what we need to do at this point in our season. We will have a few athletes sitting out, but it's really a bombs away weekend, especially for our athletes eying spots at the NCAA meet. Looking at the national lists and see where we stand. This is a big weekend for them."
The Huskies will send their field athletes along with sprinters and hurdlers down to New York with the others heading up to BU. The UConn men were again ranked No. 1 in the USTFCCCA Northeast regional rankings and this week, the Huskies' heptathlon group of Jordan Torney (Toms River, N.J.), Benjamin Grosse (Wayzata, Minn.), Nicholas Pronovost (Coventry, Conn.) and Travis Snyder (Saco, Maine) are now the top-ranked event squad by the USTFCCCA after last weekend's performance.
Torney, Grosse and Pronovost finished 1-2-3 at the Columbia Challenge. Torney's 5423-point performance last weekend has him currently ranked 30th in the national rankings.
Snyder enters the weekend ranked 22nd nationally in the pole vault while senior Daniel Claxton (Nesconset, N.Y.) comes in ranked 38th in the high jump.
On the track, freshman Terrel Williams (Maplewood, N.J.) is ranked 20th in the NCAA in the 60 meter hurdles and junior Wellington Ventura (Cresskill, N.J.) is 32nd in the 400 meters, an event he earned a his second-straight win in last weekend. Senior Eric Van Der Els (Norwalk, Conn.) sits 37th in the mile and is coming off a win at Columbia in the 3K last weekend.
