HARTFORD, Conn. – The No. 20 nationally ranked UConn Huskies came up short in a late rally, falling to No. 10 ranked UMass 2-1 Friday night at the XL Center in Hartford.
The Huskies saw their six-game Hockey East winning streak come to an end as they fall to 12-7-0 in the league and 16-12-0 overall with the loss. UMass improved to 17-9-2 and 12-5-2 in the league.
Senior Carter Turnbull (Nanaimo, British Columbia) scored the Huskies' lone goal, getting UConn to within 2-1 at 18:52 scoring on the power play and with the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker. It was Turnbull's fourth-straight game with a goal.
After two scoreless periods, UMass opened the scoring with a power play goal 7:46 into the third from Ryan Ufko. The Minutemen extended their lead to 2-0 on a Josh Lopina score at 17:05 before the Huskies put together a late push.
UConn senior Jachym Kondelik (Budejovic, Czech Republic) had the primary assist on the Turnbull goal, pushing the Husky captain's career assist total to 71, tying the UConn Division I school record for career assists (Sean Ambrosie 2009-13/71).
UMass held the Huskies to 20 shots, tying their season low mark, while putting 35 on UConn goaltender Darion Hanson (East Bethel, Minn.). UMass goaltender Matt Murray picked-up the win with 19 saves.
1st Period:
The two teams skated to a scoreless opening 20 minutes with UMass holding a 14-6 edge on shots. The Huskies got some great looks in the opening period as Kondelik rang a pair of shots of the post and senior Marc Gatcomb (Woburn, Mass.) got denied on the doorstop by Murray.
2nd Period:
Another scoreless 20 minutes of action as the Huskies killed off the only power play chance in the period, a boarding call at 12:12.
3rd Period:
The Minutemen finally broke through on their fourth power play chance of the night and took the lead 7:46 into the third period. Garrett Wait worked the puck behind the net and fed Bobby Trivigno in the corner. Trivigno fed Ufko in the high slot who buried a one-timer into the top-shelf for his fourth of the year and a 1-0 lead.
UMass made it 2-0 at 17:05 as Lopina was in front of the net to bang home a rebound off a Wait shot that was stopped by Hanson, his eighth goal of the season.
UConn got a power play chance with 1:46 left in the game and pulled Hanson for the 6-on-4 extra attacker chance. The puck got banged around in front of Murray with Kondelik and Hudson Schandor (North Vancouver, British Columbia) getting a piece before Turnbull was able to pull it out of the scrum and fire a shot past Murray through a ton of traffic to make it 2-1 with 1:08 left. It was Turnbull's ninth goal on the season.
