The UConn Huskies step back into Hockey East action this weekend kicking-off the home stretch of the regular season by hosting No. 17 Providence on Friday night at XL Center and heading up to the Whittemore Center on Saturday night to face the New Hampshire Wildcats. Friday night's game against the Friars will be carried on NESNplus.
The Huskies trail the all-time series with Providence, 14-4-3. UConn is 0-4-2 all-time against PC at the XL Center. The Huskies dropped a 6-4 decision at Providence back in November. The Friars scored three times on the power play in the win.
UConn split a weekend series with UNH at home in the XL Center last month, losing 3-1 and rebounding for a 3-2 overtime win. UNH holds a 17-12-1 edge in the all-time series. The Wildcats won the first 14 meetings between the two schools dating back to the 1960-61 season but since the Huskies are 12-3-1. Since joining Hockey East and under head coach Mike Cavanaugh, UConn is 12-7-1 in the series, including a first round playoff loss to UNH in 2015..
The Huskies are coming off a 1-1 weekend at the Connecticut Ice tournament in Bridgeport last weekend. The Huskies won their opening game against Yale, 5-1, to advance to the title game against No. 2 Quinnipiac. UConn was shutout for the third time this season, falling 2-0 to the Bobcats.
UConn's top line of Vladislav Firstov, Jachym Kondelik and Kevin O'Neil fueled the Huskies win over Yale, scoring 4 of the team's five goals and piling up five assists. Firstov finished with two goals and an assist, his second multi-goal game of the season and team-best fifth of his career.Â
Senior Jachym Kondelik had three points last weekend and leads the team with 21 points on eight goals and 13 assists. Kondelik hits the 20-point mark for the fourth-straight season and is the Huskies leading active career point leader at 92 points (24g/68a). He has moved up to 10th on the Huskies Division I career points list. His 68 career assists is third on the Division I all-time list, three away from tying the school record (71 - Sean Ambrosie 2009-13).
He is tied for 14th in Hockey East in scoring and his four power play goals is tied for fourth.Â
Kondelik is tied for 11th in Hockey East in scoring and is 13th in assists and tied for 17th in goals scored. His four power play goals are tied for fifth in the league.
Kondelik and sophomore Ryan Tverberg are candidates for the 2022 Hobey Baker Award. Fan voting is open now and will run through March 6. Fans can vote daily by visiting HobeyBaker.com/vote.
Tverberg has a team-best nine goals with nine assists on the year. He is a +6 on the season with five multi-point games and had a five-game goal scoring streak as well. He is tied for 18th in Hockey East in scoring and his nine goals is tied for 12th.
UConn grad student goaltender Darion Hanson, who transferred in this season from Union, and has started 22 of the 23 games. He started his 100th career game at last weekend's Connecticut Ice tournament On the season, he owns a 2.37 goals against average and a .919 save percentage, eighth and seventh among league leaders in both categories. He has played the fifth most minutes in Hockey East and has a 590 saves on the season, fifth best. He was named the Hockey East Goaltender of the Week for the second time this season on Monday. He has been named to the 2022 Mike Richter Award watch list.
This Season vs. Providence
Nov. 13, 2021 - L, 6-4 - @ Schneider Arena
- Four different Huskies found the back of the net but UConn came up short at No. 12 Providence, 6-4, at Schneider Arena. Providence had six different players score goals and scored three times on the power play. The Friars scored three times in the first period and after the Huskies cut it to 4-3 early in the third period, tacked on two more to pull away.
- UConn got a first period goal from grad student Jarrod Gourley, his first of the season and first with the Huskies. Sophomore Ryan Tverberg extended his goal scoring streak to five-straight games with a second period tally, his ninth of the year.
- PC got power play goals from Parker Ford, Max Crozier and Brett Berard while Kohen Olischefski, Matt Koopman and Jamie Engelbert also found the back of the net. Providence goaltender Jaxson Stauber stopped 33 shots.
- UConn held a 37-36 edge on shots but was 0-3 on the power play. Darion Hanson made 30 saves in net.
This Season vs. UNH
Jan 21, 2022 - L, 3-1 - @ XL Center
- New Hampshire's Chase Stevenson finished with a pair of goals including the game-winner in the third to deal the Huskies a 3-1 loss in game one of a two game set at the XL Center.
- UConn went up 1-0 late in the second on senior Carter Turnbull's fourth goal of the season. UNH's Colton Huard tied it up on the power play just over two minutes later to send the game to the final stanza tied at 1-1.
- Stevenson provided the go-ahead goal at 8:51, scoring on a rebound in front and then put home an empty-netter to ice away the win in the closing seconds. UNH held a 35-30 edge on shots and killed off all three UConn power play chances.
- Wildcat goaltender Mike Robinson stopped 29 in grabbing the win. UConn grad transfer Darion Hanson stopped 32 in the loss.
Jan 22, 2022 - W, 3-2 OT - @ XL Center
- UConn senior Jonny Evans buried the game-winning goal 1:58 into overtime to deliver the Huskies a 3-2 win to split the weekend set at the XL Center.
- UConn took a 2-1 lead into the third period after second period goals from senior Marc Gatcomb and freshman Sasha Teleguine, his first collegiate goal.
- UNH tied it up at 14:13 in the third period on a Filip Engaras goal, and the Huskies then killed off a late power play chance for the Wildcats to force the overtime setting up the Evans tally. New Hampshire had a 1-0 lead after the first thanks to Jackson Pierson's 11th goal on the year.
- New Hampshire goaltender Mike Robinson stopped 37 shots as the Huskies held a 40-25 edge on the shot chart. UConn goaltender Darion Hanson stopped 23 for the win.
