SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – The UConn men's golf team kept its streak of Top Five finishes alive by earning a fifth-place finish in the Donald Ross Collegiate Classic, held at the Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C.
The result marked the eighth time in eight events during the 2021-22 season that the Huskies have finished fifth or better, topped by a team victory at BIG EAST Match Play. UConn also has two seconds, two fourths and three fifths on its resume.
Led by sophomore Caleb Manuel (Topsham, Me.), who tied for 10th, UConn posted an aggregate 22-over, 296-297-293=886, to finish just nine strokes out of second place in the 17-team event. Seton Hall captured the team title with a 9-over 873, followed by Elon, Richmond, Loyola Maryland and UConn.
Manuel, UConn's leading scorer, notched his sixth Top 10 finish of the season with a 1-over, 66-77-74= 216, which included his low round of the year (66), his 10th sub-70 round, and his 13th round of par or better. The huge field included 108 golfers.
UConn sophomore Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.) posted his fourth Top 20 finish of the year with a 4-over, 74-71-75=220, to tie for 17th place. The 71 gives him eight rounds of par or better this season.
Also for the Huskies, senior Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) tied for 31st place with a 9-over, 74-81-70=225, that included his ninth par-or-better round. Freshman Trevor Lopez (Winchester, Mass.), shot a 13-over, 82-73-74=229 to tie for 56th place and sophomore Jimmy Paradise (Tampa, Fla.) tied for 72nd place with a 17-over, 82-76-75=233. Playing as an individual, freshman Eric Boulger (Walpole, Mass.) tied for 89th with a 22-over, 86-78-74=238.
UConn's season continues on March 14-15, when it heads for the Surf, Golf & Beach Club in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., to compete in the Bash at the Beach.
