Chapel Hill, NC – UConn has their 5-game win streak snapped in the first game of the Carolina Classic.
The Huskies started out Friday's game with a bang. Briana Marcelino would lead off the game with a home run to left field, her first on the year. Later in the inning, Rosie Garcia would hit a solo homer of her own, the first of her career. This extended the Huskies lead to 2-0. UConn would send a total of eight batters to the plate in the first inning.
Meghan O'Neil started in the circle for the Huskies. She would go on to pitch 4.1 innings notching four strikeouts.
The Spartans would trim the Huskies lead to 2-1 in the fourth. They would take the lead in the fifth with five runs giving them a 6-2 lead. Delaney Nagy would come in relief for O'Neil in the fifth. Nagy pitched 1.2 innings only giving up one hit.
The Huskies offense was dialed in, earning nine hits in the contest but could not put enough runs on the board. Marcelino led the way with four hits going 4-4 on the day. UConn will look to build on their success at the plate for the rest of the weekend.
The Huskies will square off against top 25 Oregon tomorrow at 10:00am. They will play the Penn State Nittany Lions at 3:00pm.
