Two-Day UConn Northeast Challenge On Deck for the Huskies

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's track & field team will host the two-day UConn Northeast Challenge this weekend at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex on campus with 22 teams sending student-athletes to compete.
UConn will host athletes from AIC, Albany, Boston University, Brown, Central Connecticut, Colby, Columbia, Dartmouth, Iona, Maine, Massachusetts, MIT, New Hampshire, Northeastern, Rhode Island, Saint Francis Brooklyn, Sacred Heart, Southern Connecticut, Stony Brook, Southern Maine, Southern New Hampshire, and Yale as well as unattached competitors as well.
"This is as big a meet, size wise, that we have hosted here maybe ever," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy. "This is going to be a high-quality meet, with high end competition. We will have some open-athletes as well including a pair of Olympians in Devon Williams in the decathlon and Lisa Wilson in the hammer. It's just incredible and will make for some great competition. And it is a scoring meet, so we will need to rise up to meet the challenge. We are looking forward to it"
The Huskies are coming off appearances at the Joe May Invitational at LSU and Southern Connecticut last weekend and are ranked No. 3 in this week's USTFCCCA Northeast Region Poll. Of the 22 teams coming this weekend's meet, 15 teams are ranked in this week's regional poll.
Senior Daniel Claxton (Nesconset, N.Y.) was named the BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week honor after his performance last weekend at LSU. Claxton had his best outing of the outdoor season, clearing the bar at 2.06 meters in the high jump to place fourth overall and he leads the BIG EAST and is 73rd on the national list.
Junior Travis Snyder (Saco, Maine) matched his best height of the outdoor season at LSU, clearing 5.11 meters to finish sixth in the field, and is up to 52nd in the national rankings. Sophomore Tanner Jameson (Durham, Conn.) was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 63.22 meters at LSU and has entered the NCAA rankings in the event at 77th.
On the track, sophomore Mahamed Sharif (Westbrook, Maine) won the 800 meters at LSU with a time of 1:50.62, his best time this outdoor season.  He ranks sixth in the BIG EAST and 91st in the NCAA.Â
In the 110 meter hurdles, freshman Terrel Williams (Maplewood, N.J.) clocked a blazing time of 13.90 seconds to finish fourth in the field at LSU. It was a new PR for Williams for the second-straight week, who continues to lead the BIG EAST and is up to 40th in the nation.
The UConn 4x400 relay team of junior Noah Woodman (Hampstead, N.H.), senior Jordan Torney (Toms River, N.J.), junior Markus Bagley (Jersey City, N.J.) and junior Wellington Ventura (Cresskill, N.J.) had the fastest time this season for the Huskies at 3:09.46 and jumped into the NCAA rankings at 45th.
The two-day meet gets underway on Friday, April 15 with the decathlon and heptathlon. Friday will conclude with he 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 10,000 meters. Events will continue through the day on Saturday, April 16 starting at 10 am as the decathlon continues. Saturday will conclude with the Huskies honoring the graduation seniors at the conclusion of the meet.
