STORRS, Conn. - Â The No. 21 nationally ranked UConn women's lacrosse team survived a late push from Marquette to take home the 18-15 victory for their ninth victory in a row and first Big East Conference win.
The first quarter began with UConn instantly jumping on the attack as junior Kate Shaffer would score only 20 seconds into the game. UConn wouldn't stop there as Sydney Watson would win the following draw control and pass it off to senior Grace Coon, who would score to give UConn the early lead. Senior Sydney Watson wouldn't take her foot off the gas as she would win the draw control and take it the length of the field to score. Â
UConn's defense would continue to shut down and prevent a Marquette counter. Marquette would eventually get on the board late in the first quarter. However, UConn would counter almost immediately to extend their lead once again. The Huskies would finish the first quarter forcing seven turnovers and making only one save.
The second quarter mirrored the first with UConn continuing to pressure the Marquette defense and goalkeeper. UConn would end up scoring six goals in the second quarter led by senior Kate Shaffer who would finish the first half with four goals to give UConn the 12-2 lead.
Marquette would turn the tide in the second half as they would score five unanswered goals in the third quarter to cut the UConn lead in half. Coon scores to end the Marquette counterattack. The Huskies defense would look to prevent the Marquette counterattack making big saves and blocks. Senior Lia Laprise would ensure the Huskies maintained their lead as she would score to give UConn a seven-goal lead once again. The Huskies would head into the fourth quarter holding a 14-8 lead.
The fourth quarter would begin with Marquette cutting the Huskies lead to four, but UConn would continue to respond with a goal of their own every time the Golden Eagles got close. Senior Landyn White made several key saves that would help UConn go on the attack and score to extend their lead. Shaffer continued to dominate as she would score her fifth of the afternoon to give UConn the four-goal lead once again. Marquette would once again threaten cutting the lead to two with one minute left in the game, but Watson would drive down the field and score with 40 seconds left in the game to give UConn the three-goal lead.
The Huskies will travel to Denver on Saturday, April 9 with opening draw scheduled for 12 p.m.
