STORRS, Conn. -Â Primed for a rematch of last season's BIG EAST Championship game, the No. 20 UConn women's lacrosse team will take on No. 8 Denver on Saturday, April 9 at 2 p.m. EST.
UConn cracked the top-20 of the ILWomen/IWLCA poll for the first time since 2013, where it was the No. 18 team entering the NCAA Tournament. Saturday will mark the first matchup between the two rivals as ranked teams.
Saturday could also be another milestone day for senior Sydney Watson, as she is two goals away from becoming UConn's all-time leading scorer.
The Huskies are on a tear and are riding a nine-game win streak, which is their longest win streak in program history.
UConn fended off a late comeback by Marquette as it secured an 18-15 victory in its BIG EAST opener last Saturday. Junior Kate Shaffer led all players with five goals, while Watson added in four goals, five points and eight draw controls.
Shaffer has been on a tear since entering the starting lineup over the last four games, registering 21 goals and three assists. The junior had 13 goals and seven assists over the first seven games, and currently ranks second on the team in goals (34) and assists (44).
SCOUTING DENVER
Denver is 11-1 on the season, with its lone loss coming to then-No. 1 Boston College. Bea Behrins leads the BIG EAST in goals (42), goals per game (3.5), points (54) and points per game (4.5). Sam Thacker, the 2021 BIG EAST Tournament MOP, ranks second in the NCAA in caused turnovers per game (3.0) and ranks third in the BIG EAST in ground balls per game (2.5). Victoria Marces is a force in net as she ranks second in the NCAA in goals against average (7.2).
