Huskies Win Home Opening Meet

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women's track and field team defended their home turf on Saturday at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs, besting the field of six teams in the UConn Dog Fight Invitational.
UConn finished with 223 total points to finish ahead of Yale in second place with 168 points. Albany was third overall at 157 points followed by Northeastern in fourth (54), Boston University in fifth (47) and Southern Connecticut State in sixth (28).
"A heck of a day for us," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy. "We were a little out of position in some places and really still training hard. But the weatherman sure cooperated today, and we got some really good performances."
"On the women's side, we are tough, and we are getting tougher," stated Roy.  "You can just see and feel us grow every time out. Our confidence and knowing who we are is really coming through and seeping through the whole team. I was really impressed. I think we are going to be alright."
On the track…
- Junior Sophia Castronovo (Emerson, N.J.) won the 800 meters and did so coming down the final stretch, beating Yale's Kyra Pretre at the line. Castronovo crossed at 2:16.25, new PR by four seconds, to edge Pretre at 2:16.99.
- The Huskies took the top-three spots in the 5,000 meters led by freshman Chloe Thomas (Dundas, Ontario) who won the event with a time of 17:12.06, a new PR by 12 seconds. Junior Randi Burr (Westerly, R.I.) was second in 17:14.84 and freshman Caroline Towle (Bedford, Mass.) was third in 17:24.23.
- UConn finished 2nd-3rd-4th in the 1,500 meters led by junior Celia Chacko (Windsor, Conn.) who posted a time of 4:34.08 in second, a new PR. In third was freshman Jenna Zydanowicz (West Hartford, Conn.) with a time of 4:35.39 and senior Emma Krebs (Roxbury, Conn.) was fourth in 4:35.61.
- In the 100 hurdles, junior Emily Lavarnway (Ovid, N.Y.) took second place with a time of 14.43 seconds, a new PR. Freshman Katelyn Reid (Middletown, N.J.) was fourth in 14.86 seconds, also a new PR.
- Freshman Brianna Davis (Bay Shore, N.Y.) took second in the 100-meter dash, clocking a 11.74 seconds, a new PR in her first time in the event this season.
- Freshman Raquel Rosa (Waterbury, Conn.) took third in the 200-meter dash, clocking in a 24.14 seconds, a new PR.
- Freshman Jalah Cooper (Windsor, Conn.) took fourth in the 400 meters, posting a time of 59.46 seconds in her first time running the event outdoors this season.
- Freshman Gabby Davis (Franklin Park, N.J.) was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a new PR time of 1:03.88.Â
- UConn's 4x400 relay team of Rosa, Lavarnway, Gabby Davis and Castronovo finished second with a time of 3:51.57.
In the field…
- UConn grabbed three of the top-five spots in the pole vault led by junior Emma Chee (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) who won with a height of 3.93 meters. Freshman Kalli Knott (Erie, Pa.) took third at 3.63 meters and classmate Mallory Maltz (Glastonbury, Conn.) was fifth at 3.18 meters.
- Junior Patricia Mroczkowski (Berlin, Conn.) continued her strong start to the outdoor season, posting her best height of the season for the third-straight week. Mroczkowski won with a height of 1.80 meters.
- In the hammer throw, senior Mikyla Rodgers (South Huntington, N.Y.) was second overall with a throw of 56.90 meters. Freshman Natalia Surdej (Lancaster, N.Y.) took third and posted a new PR with a throw of 56.88 meters.
- In the long jump, UConn senior Kelly Ward (Oxford, Conn.) was second followed by sophomore Jasmine Barrow (Athens, Ga.) in third. Ward had a leap of 5.70 meters, a new PR for the senior. Barrow had a leap of 5.55 meters.
- In the triple jump, freshman Zayin Roe (Richmond, Va.) was second with a leap of 11.75 meters
- Freshman Brynn Madonna (Allendale, N.J.) was second in the javelin with a throw of 41.40 meters, her best performance of the outdoor season. She came back in the shot put and took sixth with a throw of 12.91 meters, a new PR and her best jump outdoors.
- Sophomore Jackie Simington (Shelton, Conn.) was third in the javelin at 37.54 meters.
- Freshman Emily Alty (Asburn, Ontario) was fourth in the discus with a toss of 44.65 meters.
