STORRS, Conn. – For the first time since February of 2020, local middle school students had the chance to visit the UConn campus as part of the Goal Line Project, as the women's lacrosse team and UConn's OSAD hosted East Hartford students in April.
Over 20 middle school students visited campus for an afternoon with the women's lacrosse team. The team gave a facilities tour, gave insight to their educational and athletic experience, and the day ended with a corn hole competition.
"We were so happy to have been able to get The Goal Line Project back to campus this year and have East Hartford Middle School students connecting in-person with our student-athletes," said Directors of Student-Athlete Development Rachel Howard and Riley Fitzgerald. "The impact of the lessons learned and relationships built through this program cannot be overstated."
The Goal Line Project benefits middle school students who are being guided to succeed in the classroom and in life via group activities and lessons in school and at the UConn campus. It was created in 2007 through a grant from the Savings Bank of Manchester Charitable Foundation (SBMCF) to connect UConn Football Student Athletes, as mentors, with at-risk East Hartford Middle School students.
Through this program, EHMS learns about the importance of education, hard work, commitment, teamwork, and sportsmanship, which can be applied to their youthful lives.
