Top-Seed HookC Shuts Out Georgetown, 4-0, In BIG EAST Opener

MASON, Ohio - The top-seeded UConn baseball team (44-13) opened the BIG EAST Championship with a 4-0 shutout of Georgetown on Thursday afternoon at Prasco Park.
Starting pitcher Austin Peterson was fantastic on Thursday with seven shutout innings on the hill, allowing just four hits and striking out eight. The Chesterton, Ind. native recorded his 10th win of the season to become just the seventh Husky to register double-digit wins in a season.
Peterson got some help from his center fielder in the first inning, T.C. Simmons made a leaping catch at the wall in center and doubled off the runner at second to get out of a jam in the opening frame.
The Huskies jumped on the board in the fourth with a clutch two-out, two-run single for Korey Morton to make it 2-0 Huskies.
UConn added a run on a bullet double from David Smith in the fifth to make it 3-0.
Peterson escaped a jam in the sixth by locking up Christian Ficca with a breaker to strand runners at the corners. UConn immediately responded with a two-out RBI double for Simmons to push the lead to four.
Peterson finished the day with eight strikeouts and his 129 for the season ranks second most in UConn single-season history (Colin McLaughlin, 139, 1979).Â
Brendan O'Donnell struck out Jake Hyde for his only out of the eighth and Devin Kirby finished it off by recording the final five outs.
The Huskies will move to the winner's bracket and play on Saturday, May 28 at a time to be determined.

- With the victory, Coach Penders earns his 650th win as head coach of the Huskies.
- The shutout is the sixth of the season for the Huskies.
- The UConn pitching staff notched 12 strikeouts on Thursday, they have now struck out 561Â batters. Third-most in a single-season (575, 2017).
