Nelson Wins New England Amateur Title

CRANSTON, R.I. – UConn golfer Jared Nelson is experiencing a red-hot summer – and it has nothing to do with the weather.
On the heels of winning a qualifying tournament for the U.S. Amateur Championship and the Vermont Amateur title, Nelson won the 93rd New England Amateur Championship Wednesday at the Alpine Country Club in Cranston, R.I.
Nelson (Rutland, Vt.), who graduated from UConn in May but will return to play for the Huskies as a graduate student in 2022-23, fought off challenges during Wednesday's third round to post an 8-under, 69-69-70=208 to win the tournament by one stroke. For the tourney's three rounds, Nelson had nine birdies and two eagles.
Christian Emmerich (Mass.), who shot a final-round 62, Bryson Richards (Vt.) and Joseph Harney (Mass.) tied for second, each with a 7-under 209.
Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.), Nelson's UConn teammate, tied for fifth place with a 6-under, 69-70-71=210.
The tournament began with 147 golfers, which was cut to the top 60 after the first two rounds.
Nelson, who has been one of UConn's top performers for the last two seasons, began the month of June by winning the prestigious Hornblower Memorial in Plymouth, Mass.
He followed that during the last week of June with an impressive 9-under, 133 to win the U.S. Amateur qualifying tournament at Connecticut National Golf Club in Putnam. Nelson will compete for the U.S. Amateur Championship on Aug. 15-21 at the Ridgewood Country Club and Arcola Country Club in Paramus, N.J.
During the first week of July, Nelson fired a back-nine 30 in the final round to finish off an outstanding 15-under 269 and win the 116th Vermont Amateur Championship at Brattleboro Country Club. Â
Nelson was UConn's second-leading scorer during the 2021-22 season, averaging 72.61 per round, with three Top 10 and five Top 20 finishes. He posted 13 rounds of par-or-better and shot a season-low round of 67 on three different occasions.
