SYRACUSE, N.Y. – With an offensive flurry in the first half, the UConn women's soccer team (1-0-1) stormed past Syracuse to claim its first win of the season, 6-0.
The Huskies tallied five first half goals including three goals in a five-minute span.
Tri-captain Jessica Mazo and UConn took the lead 1-0 at 20:28 after the Huskies created a turnover deep in Syracuse territory. The Bridgeport, Conn. native streaked in and then chipped a perfect shot off the bottom of the crossbar and over the goal line.
Just over two minutes later at 22:47, another tri-captain, Emma Zaccagnini, notched her first goal of the season. The senior teed up a left-footed strike off a clearance from just outside the box to make it 2-0 Huskies.
Fast forward 90 seconds later and Jada Konte got in on the fun by creating in transition. The talented junior forward crossed up her defender and unleashed a long distance strike to push the UConn lead to three.
UConn got a milestone moment at the 33:50 mark with freshman Chioma Okafor scoring her first career goal. The Blantyre, Malawi native used her top-notch speed to get past the defense and maneuver around the keeper to create an easy breakaway goal.

Abbey Jones capped the five-goal first half by heading home a perfect corner kick from Cara Elmendorf. It is the second goal of the season for Jones.
Freshman Maddie Carroll registered her first career goal at the 69:49 mark on a long ball forward that she was able to chase down and then maneuver around a defender before sliding her shot past the keeper.

Kaitlyn Mahoney secured her fourth career shutout in goal by making five saves in the match.
For the Huskies, it was their first game scoring six goals in a match since scoring a 6-0 win at Providence in 2007.
UConn is now 21-2-2 all-time against Syracuse and it is the first time since 2003 that the Huskies have put up six goals or more against the Orange.
Next up, the Huskies host its home opener on Thursday, August 25 against Top-25 ranked South Carolina at 7 p.m. at Morrone Stadium.
