Huskies Close out Dog Pound Invitational With Wins Over Brown and Bryant

STORRS, Conn. - Â The UConn women's volleyball team finished the dog pound challenge with a four-set victory over Brown and a five-set victory over Bryant to sweep the Dog Pound Invitational.
It was an all-around team effort that propelled UConn to an undefeated weekend. The Huskies were led by seniors Caylee Parker, Jasmine Davis, and Madi Whitmire. Parker would finish with a total of 45 kills over the weekend, Davis with 41, and Whitmire would finish with 111 assists.
Game 1: UConn vs. Brown
UConn would start the game firing on all cylinders as Madi Whitmire and Jasmine Davis would connect on multiple possessions to score points for the Huskies. UConn would eventually jump out to a 6-2 lead forcing Brown to call an early timeout. From there the Huskies would never look back as they would continue to put pressure on Brown's defense to make plays. UConn would eventually take set one by a final of 25-16. Jasmine Davis would not be denied in the first set as she would rack up five kills early on to help propel the Huskies to victory.
Set two would start very similar to the first set with UConn jumping out to an early lead. Following a Brown timeout, UConn would continue to extend their lead, but a Brown comeback would cut the Huskies lead to three forcing UConn to take a late timeout. Â UConn would eventually regroup and end up taking set two by a final of 25-19. Senior Allie Garland played a vital role in the set two victory, finishing the set with four kills and one block.
The third set Brown would come out firing as the would jump to an 18-11 lead and never look back. The Bears would use the momentum gained early in the set and build upon that for a 25-18 victory.
Set four was a back-and-forth contest between the Bears and the Huskies, with the largest lead of the set being only four points. A back and forth start to the match would eventually take a turn as Brown would jump to a 14-10 lead causing UConn to call the timeout. UConn would regroup and go on a three-point scoring run to instantly force Brown to take a timeout. This trend would last the entire set as neither team was able to build momentum and build leads. UConn and Brown would eventually tie the match at 21 and trade points until a kill by Kennadie Jake Turner would seal the 32-30 set victory and the 3-1 match victory for the Huskies.
Senior Jasmine Davis would finish with 15 kills, while Caylee Parker would finish with 12.
Game 2: UConn vs. Bryant
Heading into the final match of the Dog Pound Challenge, UConn and Bryant would face off with neither team having lost a game. The thrilling five set match was a battle until the end with the Huskies coming out victorious. UConn would be led by the dynamic duo of Caylee Parker and Jasmine Davis, as Parker would finish with 20 total kills, and Davis would finish with 18.
UConn would star the match with a five-point scoring run to force Bryant to call the timeout. From there, the Huskies would not look back as they would continue to pile on and find holes in the Bryant defense. UConn would eventually take set one by a final of 25-11, capped off by a thunderous kill by Caylee Parker.
Bryant would come out in the second set fighting hard for every point they could get. UConn and Bryant would continue to trade blows as the Huskies looked to take set 2. UConn would take a 24-19 lead in the second set, but a Bryant comeback would force the Huskies to call a timeout. The Bulldogs would not let the timeout slow them down as they would eventually come back to take set two by a final of 26-24.
Set three would begin and UConn and Bryant would trade points the whole set, with the largest lead being when Bryant was leading 5-3. UConn and Bryant would continue battling; however, UConn would come away with the 25-23 set victory.
Bryant would not go away without a fight however, as the Bulldogs would jump out to the early lead in the set and never look back. Bryant would end up taking set four by a final of 25-23. With Bryant taking set four, the two teams would head into a set five winner take all match played to 15.
Bryant and UConn would continue to battle as they would trade points early in the set. UConn would eventually jump out to an 8-5 lead and would look to put the Bulldogs away for the victory. Coming out of a Brown timeout, UConn would capitalize off Brown mistakes and take the set 15-9 as well as the match victory.
While UConn was led by Parker and Davis, it was an all-around team effort with freshman Brenna Wyman laying her body on the line to dive for a ball, or Madi Whitmire stepping up defensively with multiple solo blocks.

UConn will turn their attention to BIG EAST action as they will be taking on Seton Hall sept. 23 in South Orange, New Jersey. The game is set to begin at 6pm and can be stream on Flo Sports.
