QUEENS, N.Y. – The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team fell in five sets to St. John's University Saturday night.
UConn would start the game off strong jumping out to an 4-1 lead forcing St. John's to call a timeout. Coming out of the timeout both teams would go point for point, never letting the other build a large lead. Any time St. Johns would jump out to a lead, UConn would respond with a scoring run of their own. From the start, senior Caylee Parker would be the leader for the Huskies, keeping them constantly within striking distance. Neither team would go away without a fight as the first set would end with a St. Johns win by a final of 36-34. Senior Kennadie Jake-Turner would finish set one with six kills while Caylee Parker would finish with five.
St. John's would start the second set firing on all cylinders eventually jumping out to a 6-0 lead. UConn would not let the early run by the Red Storm phase them, as a 6-0 run by the Huskies would bring UConn back into the game and force St. John's to call a timeout. Senior Jasmine Davis would be a force in the second set, helping the Huskies secure the victory with nine kills.
UConn and St. John's would split the next two sets to force a winner take all fifth set. Seniors Caylee Parker and Jasmine Davis were both vital in the Huskies comeback and fourth set victory as they would head into the fifth set with double digit kills and were two kills away each from having 10 plus kills in set four alone.
The fifth set would be a battle as both teams would continue to trade blows. UConn would jump out to an early lead forcing St. John's to take a timeout. Following the timeout, St. John's would go on a run of their own and take a 12-8 lead forcing UConn to take the timeout. UConn would continue to fight, cutting the Red Storm lead to one, but St. John's would respond and take the fifth set by a final of 15-12. Senior Jasmine Davis would finish with 21 kills and seven digs and four blocks.
