Storrs, Conn. - The University of Connecticut track and field teams are set to get the 2023 season underway as they travel to Boston, MA for the UMass Invite on Sunday. Â
After the short break, both track & field programs look to get back to where they left off last meet at the Joe Donahue Invitational on December 9. Taking charge for UConn are six captains; Jenna Zydanowicz, Jasmine Barrow, Emily Lavarnway, Travis Snyder, Aaron Hacket, and Nick Pronovost. All six have worked hard to accomplish personal and team goals for their programs including distance runner, Zydnanowicz, who was recently selected as the Big East representative for the Student-Athlete Leadership Forum that takes place in Maryland on April 13-15. Â
In the last meet, the selected captains looked strong and both programs had a successful outing. For the women, Lavarnway set a personal record in the pentathlon with a total score of 4,075 points. That result put her first in the nation and second all-time in UConn program history. Barrow also took second place in the triple jump with a 12.18m result. Â
For the men, Snyder took first in the pole vault with a 5.10m result. Also, Hackett finished second in the 4X400 relay. Pronovost didn't compete in the Joe Donahue meet, but there is plenty to look forward to as he finished strong last indoor season in the heptathlon at the Big East Indoor Championship with personal bests in the 60 meters finishing in third at 7.11 seconds, the shot put finishing in second at 13.52m, and the 60-meter hurdles finishing in second at 8.15 seconds. Â
As a result, both teams secured first place in the team score as the men had 172 points and the women had 160 points. Â
The Huskies are excited for what's to come ahead of the UMass Invite on Sunday starting at 9 a.m. Track & Field Director, Beth Alford-Sullivan, remains optimistic for another successful result. Â
"We're excited to get back into the season and put up more successful performances," Alford-Sullivan said. "I'm looking forward to seeing these athletes continue what they started."Â
